"2007" THE YEAR OF THE BLACK BEAR

In 2007 the UDWR (Utah Division of Wildlife Resources) experienced more bear sightings and encounters than ever before. The CRO (Central Regional Office) responded to over 70 bear calls. A typical year would be from 0-12 calls. What was the reason for so many bear calls? Well, no one can know for sure, but of course I have my own opinion. Last year was a very, very dry year. We also had a late frost which killed many plants. With this combination many berries and acorns did not produce. With the lack of typical bear food, bears resorted to finding campsites, garbage cans, and other sources of food they may or may not have eaten on a typical year. In fact, the entire west experienced increased bear problems. This particular bear posted above was located in Covered Bridge up Spanish Fork Canyon. We caught this bear and relocated it.
